The charge for replacing a Rheem Ruud Furnace HSI igniter and flame sensor was $360 plus a $120 weekend service charge. After speaking with two other heating and cooling contractors and internet research, the maximum parts cost is approximately $65 for the igniter and $25 for a flame sensor. Based on an actual repair time of 30 minutes (matching an independent contractor estimate), the effective hourly labor rate to perform the repair was $540.
It should be noted that in discussions with another heating contractor a flame sensor only fails if damaged during cleaning, so it is very likely the $115 charged for the flame sensor labor and part should have been the small amount of time to clean the sensor. When I called Fox Valley to question the prices the response was they charge flat parts and labor prices for various repairs and since the work was signed for there would be no adjustment in price.
He stated other contractors charge more, which is hard to believe someone could charge more than $540/hour for labor plus a service charge. A complaint will be filed with the BBB, of which Fox Valley is not a member. A single star was assigned to indicate the furnace was repaired.
