Critical: Quality, Value They installed a new hvac system now there's water laying under the units and they say it's completely normal so basically they don't want to fix it. I bet if it was at the owners house they would be all over it. Service: Installation

Tyler Douglas arrived promptly within the timeframe he was scheduled to repair our AC unit. He provided exceptional customer service by being friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and demonstrating integrity. My husband and I appreciated Tyler's humble demeanor and patience in answering our questions. He is truly an asset to the James River Air Conditioning Company.

I called James River Air on Friday to schedule a service for my AC. I was told they would come out later that day and if not they would definitely be out Saturday Morning. When they hadn't arrived Saturday I called again and was told by the same person oh it usually takes 3 days so if they aren't there tomorrow definitely they will be there on Monday.

I reminded her of the call on Friday and how she said definitely about the technician coming out but didn't show. She also thinks Monday would be three days. She was answering the phone from home cause I heard kids in the background so the company is pretty sketchy. They will just keep you waiting forever. I told her (someone who just answering the phone and doesn't really care) that I was upset.

I am having family in on Sunday and the AC isn't working. I need them to come out asap. They advertise emergency services but that seems like BS since anything that takes 3 days is not an emergency. Just lost me as a customer! Mad as he'll.

Wanted to share my amazing experience about not only the timely manner of my fix but also the professionalism of the technician who fixed my problem. I called this morning at 9am about my A/C unit only pushing out hot air no matter what temperature I set my thermostat at. They got a technician out to me within 4 hrs of my original call. The tech shows up and begins to troubleshoot the issue.

He finds and fixes it within 20 minutes then asks to check the rest of the unit which was in the attic and also the vents just to make sure there were no potential for future issues. He didn't have to go above and beyond but he did without me asking. This is what a customer forward company looks like. Thank you James River Air, you earned a life long customer.

We had James River Air come out and fix our AC unit that had a leak in the coil. Unfortunately the initial coil they installed was faulty, but they were quick to schedule a new appointment to come out and replace it again. The whole process from start to finish was easy and all the technicians were professional and kind. Mark came out and replaced the coil to our AC unit.

He was extremely kind and professional and went above and beyond to clean out all the leaves and wash down our outdoor unit while he was waiting for testing to finish up. James River Air was worth what we payed for their quality service

James River sent out two Techs to service our H-vac system They were courteous and worked quickly and replaced the two system filters. We are supposed to have two services per year, but as it takes three or more weeks to schedule service, we normally only schedule one. It is apparent they need more Techs. Techs we had were great!

We are big fans of James River! We bought our first system in 2008 and have enjoyed great maintenance and comfort in heating and air. It's time for a new system. Installation happens In one week. In the meantime the company is doing all they can to keep us comfortable. Luckily the weather is cooperating and we don't need a thing. Highly recommend this company. All employees are kind, helpful, and professional. You get what you pay for. Happy to support this great company.

Zach arrived on time, listened to our concerns, and gave us options as to how to correct the loud noise our HVAC unit was making from total replacement to adding oil to the system. We opted for the oil, but he let us know about upcoming promotions should we decide to replace our aging system. In addition, he went the extra mile and got the okay to perform the scheduled maintenance then instead of 3 weeks later as previously scheduled.

He was both personable as well as professional. We have been impressed by James River Air for the past five years and highly recommend their services for your heating, electrical, and plumbing needs.

Mark, our technician, responded the same day or gas boiler stopped putting out heat. I submitted a request for service online first thing that morning (about 5:45am) and got a call back a few hours later saying that my request was received. Mark was able to fix the problem in less than an hour and was very kind and courteous to my parents who were at the house with my children while I was at work. We were very fortunate to get our heat fixed so quickly. Thank you Mark and thank you James River Air!

I have been a customer since the late 80's. I have been quite satisfied with more experience. The technicians are professional, polite, and answer questions honestly. They are on time. If there is a delay, you are contacted. My HVAC systems have lasted many years. I think the key is maintenance. It is the best insurance against problems. Highly recommend.

Came back from a vacation with no heat. Called James River Air up and they got to us that night for a diagnostic. Our system needed to be replaced. They installed a new system within a week. The whole experience was transparent, efficient, and as pleasant as it could be. Obviously, it sucks having to buy a new system but this is what happens with older homes. Many thanks to James River for their professional AND transparent service.

Technician was polite and professional and explained the problem why we had no heat after the first technician did the annual maintenance and forgot to switch the furnace motor back on. The first technician was polite and explained how the intake and vents worked and found out our model of thermostat was not compatible with a device that could stabilize room temperature in an open floor plan home

Tuesday of Thanksgiving week and we woke up to a broken and leaking hot water heater. I started making calls, James River was the first that could get someone out to see us that day. We had not used them before, but beggars can't be choosers in this situation! Upon inspection that afternoon we needed a new hot water heater. While he was at our house the tech (Jeremy) called his office and rearranged his schedule for the following afternoon. Wednesday afternoon, Jeremy and crew showed up as promised, replaced the hot water heater and got us going in time to host our family Thanksgiving dinner the next day. We'll be loyal customers from this point forward!

Brand new, high end, unit installed in Sept. and it's already failed twice. Every time it fails, it takes multiple days to get any kind of support. They say that most A/C systems use the same parts and installation is the most important factor to ensure reliability. When your unit keeps on failing then one may begin to suspect James River Air isn't a reliable choice.

Our family has been customers since 1998 at a prior house. We trusted James River so much that we had them check the system on this house before we moved here in 2006. We have had them install tankless hot water heater as well as upstairs gas and AC system and dual fuel (heat pump with gas back-up) and AC. While they will point out improvements to add, their focus is on preserving the relationship with the homeowner and not a hard sell for additional services.

I have found James River has very experienced professional staff. There is confidence that who they send knows what they are doing. The most recent visit was from Mark Corey, a senior technician with a lot of experience.

James River does a great job for us. They are always on time, responsive, thorough, and professional. Mike did a thorough job inspecting all the aspects of the system and provided helpful recommendations. He answered all of my questions thoroughly and helped me understand more about how the system works and how to keep it functioning efficiently.

I rated James River 2 stars due to several issues we had with the installation and communication with the company. The two things that happened very promptly were having the salesman come to the house and receiving the first bill. They offered to provide window units while waiting for the installation (this was admittedly a nice touch) however they said the installers would take them and that was not the case.

I called again to have them removed a few days after because nobody had contacted me about them. The install was done on the scheduled day and the technicians arrived without notice. I suppose this isn't necessary, but a heads up that they were 15 minutes out would have been nice. There were, however, some issues. The power cord to the outside unit looked like it had been snagged and there was some exposed wire.

The attic access panel was filthy and there were several gouges and scars from trying to get the new unit in there and/or getting the old one out. This was an attic panel that I recently painted myself, so I know that it was fine prior to the installation. Most of the dirt came off with a wet rag, but a heads up or apology from the installers would have been nice.

That evening, I sent a text to the sales rep we worked with and my wife did the online chat. Both said someone would contact us to rectify the issue. 24 hours later, we hadn't heard anything so I called the main office. I spoke with the installation manager and he said he would have someone with scheduling call me that day. The next day, I still hadn't heard anything so I called back and spoke with him again.

He said that he would try to get someone out there the next day. Someone did come out, but again, no heads up. I was fortunately almost home when I saw the doorbell camera go off and I was able to be there. The technician was going to put electrical tape on the wire, but I asked him to replace it so he replaced the exposed section. These practices do not instill confidence that the entire job was done properly and the lack of communication and follow-through has been very frustrating.

If you read one review, please read mine. Learn from my mistakes. James River Heating and Air WILL price gouge you. I was hot. I was tired. I should have done my research. That's on me. I needed my 12 year old AC unit replaced in a rush because it completely gave out on me. James River came out, and said the repair would be more than 1k for a fan motor and that I should think about replacing the whole unit.

A "supervisor" who was actually just a glorified salesman came out and sold me a unit for 10k, which is roughly 2x the price an AC unit should be for my house (4k-6.5k). I just wanted it over and done with, and for my house to be bearable again, so I signed the paperwork and it was installed the next day. Yes, they were friendly and accommodating.

But I would rather be treated like dirt by a company than to be price gouged and worry how I'm going to eat for the next few years. Go with a smaller company. Don't go with James River. Do your research before agreeing to terms.

Here's what kind of company James River Air is. We bought our house 90 days ago. The previous owners had bought three units from JRA in the past 5 years, and had purchased the 10 year extended warranty on each of them. James River Air will not honor the warranty for us because the previous owners had to have notified them in writing 30 days BEFORE we closed to transfer the warranty.

So they will not honor the warranty for us. I asked if they were going to refund half the money to the previous owners, and they said no. So they collected money for the full 10 year warranty on three units, and they will not honor the remaining 5 years of the warranty and also are keeping the money. Poor, poor policy and poor customer service. If they honored the warranties, they'd have themselves a customer. Since they won't, they don't.

Had 93 year old mother-in-law purchase ac and heater from JRA with 10 year warranty 5 years ago and the system has had issues. She had her bi annual checkup in February 2021. Went to visit her and notice black spores on under seat of toilet. The house just felt wet with humidity. I checked ac to see if coils were doing their job of removing water to drain.

No water was draining. I proceeded with the little plugger to clean the drain pipe and still no water dripping from coils. Call JRA to get service guy. Service guy reports back to management that everything is fine nothing broken. Their manager says his system has nothing to do with spores. Look at the pics. The house wasn't flooded nor water pipes breaking. Water had to come from somewhere (AC system) I do not recommend these guys.

Had three different companies try to fix a problem with our HVAC. None of which figured out the issue and still charged us site visit fees. James River was the fourth to come out, and was able to fix the issue. As a matter of fact, it was an electrical problem, not an HVAC problem. James River was still able to fix the issue and get us cooling again.

Since then, we have purchased an entire HVAC system, water heater, and many other services, well over 10g range. I've heard they're a bit more expensive, but you get what you pay for, well worth it!

I'm incredibly grateful that Taz responded to my review. I wasn't expecting anything to be done, but he was able to get a technician and the part to my house within two hours instead of waiting four more days. The tech was great, as always, and he fixed the AC with the new motor in only 15 minutes. I'm not sure what miscommunication had happened about the part not being available, but I'm very pleased with how this was handled once it was brought to someone else's attention.

Had a brand new unit installed in Late January, have had them out 3 times to fix the unit already. First time they didn't put the proper connector to the house and ended up blowing all my air in my crawl space. Second time was a diverter valve issue, no air going upstairs. Third time was 6 days ago when the compressor failed, called them out last Thursday 8/5, technician said it's going to take too long to fix and I have other jobs I need to get to "someone should be out tomorrow to fix it" just got scheduled today 8/9 for someone to come out 8/11 to fix it. Needless to say I'm not happy.

I called them yesterday morning because our A.C. Is out. The lady couldn't tell me when the technician would show up, which I could understand if it would be the same day but I called yesterday for them to send somebody and it's now the next day at 6:00 in the evening and nobody has called or shown up to fix my A.C. I called them this morning to see if they could give me a time that they would show up to fix it and the lady told me "you're on the list but I can't tell you when they will show up". She said it in tone like I was annoying her. I am not impressed so far.

I called James River because there was no cool air coming out of the A/C. So they sent someone out who pretty much said we needed to clean the coils with cold water and change the air filter. I did that, which cost me $129.00. Ok so be it. However, that did not solve the problem. They had another person come out who diagnosed the problem as a reversing valve.

Problem 1. They ordered the reversing valve on a Friday and claimed they would call us when it was there. I called the following Thursday and low and behold after raising a little cain, it was there. They dropped off the part and the next day (Friday) a man came out and fixed it. He said it would be 24/48 hours before the cool air would settle back into the home.

By that Sunday, it was 86 degrees in the home and the problem still was not solved. When they say 24 hour service, that is a flat out lie. 24 hours means it doesn't matter what time it is, someone needs to come out and fix the problem immediately. Not wait until the next morning. Now I am out $1,653.00. I called and they brought another tech out who said the problem was the compressor and this can be misdiagnosed between the two parts. Then, they brought a sales lady to come out and provide an estimate which is close to $9,000.00.

So let's be very clear. They couldn't solve the problem and started jamming me up for more money by stating I needed a whole new unit. Which the way they ran this was a total scam. I called two other A/C companies, one which fixed the problem in its entirety and both of which provided estimates for well under the price that James River wanted. I would rather give them 1/2 a star, only because the techs to their credit were courteous.

Technician was awesome. Service was awesome. Someone else did some work through our warranty company and there was an issue that I was concerned would cause a fire which I didn't want to wait two days to get looked it. Ryan came out on a Sunday, looked, showed me what was wrong, explained what it was, what it meant, the risks I was worried about, and how it'd be resolved at a level i could understand.

Excellent quality and service, and he did save us from a potential fire. I may skip the warranty company next time and just give James River AC a call for anything related to stuff they support.

Do not! I repeat, do NOT use this company! I am writing this review three years after we had them come out for basic maintenance of our HVAC unit, which had been working just fine. The tech proceeded to tell us that unfortunately there was a leak in the unit that couldn't be fixed and we needed a whole new unit. She then had her manager come out to double check because we were shocked.

As I said, the unit was working fine and we had just called for a maintenance and cleaning appointment. The manager came out and confirmed that our unit had a leak and was kaput. He said that we had only had heat because it was going into emergency mode, but once summer hit, it would be totally done. Proceeded to try to sell us a new unit. I, thank goodness, decided to get a second opinion, and called Woodfin.

They said that there was nothing wrong with our unit! No leak! Just needed a good cleaning which he did. Three years later, this same unit is still going strong. The people who have left good reviews of this company just don't realize that they were had.

I cannot give enough praises to James River. I wanted to put a google review on the website but it wouldn't allow me to do it. I want to give praise to Megan- in the office- and Chris, Caleb and Hunter- technicians. Chris did my yearly service and did a wonderful job. Hunter and Caleb did a fantastic job to help troubleshoot a problem I was having.

They came in with masks and booties. They followed strict protocols. All were friendly, knowledgeable and professional. Meagan was so friendly and helpful in the office as well. I cannot say enough good things about this company and the people I have named.

Our 2nd floor heat wasn't working properly so we called James River to diagnose the problem. They installed the outdoor unit 4 years ago, so we hoped they could solve the issue. The technician talked about coils heating up too high and something blown, ultimately diagnosing that we needed a new motor on the inside air handler. With great concern, he stated if we are going to do that, we might as well replace the whole handler.

We paid the technician $275 for his service call and the sales manager and quoted us $4,000 to replace the unit. Thank goodness for helpful neighbors who texted me to tell me JR has a reputation for wanting to install units. His recommended service technician came by and figured out it was just an issue with our thermostat. A very simple fix! We told him was the JR tech told us and he didn't see anything in line with the bogus diagnosis. My recommendation: GO ANYWHERE ELSE. They are not trustworthy.

Updated from 1 to 3 after a representative contacted us as result of our Yelp review. James River Air gets 5 stars for their follow-up. The representative listened to our concerns and responded in the manner I would have expected prior to our recent experience. My confidence in the company was restored. I will give them another opportunity and am optimistic that I will receive high-quality service without complaining.

Original review: We have had a service contract with James River Air since replacing our HVAC system several years ago. We recently hired them for a plumbing issue: HUGE MISTAKE. $388 for labor to replace a garbage disposal. Day 1: $100 to come out and tell me I needed to buy a Badger 5 Insinkerator. Representative was very nice. Day 2: $288 to install the insinkerator. Informed we needed to buy a plug attached not a a wire attached insinkerator ( previous rep left out this important detail). Today's representative made it clear that this is common knowledge and we are idiots for not knowing.

For an extra $50 fee he said he could adapt it. After making the adjustment he informed us that his change voided our warranty (Yep, I get this, but good business would have been to tell me before making the cut.) I will NEVER make this mistake again. I will go dispose of the disposal he left in the middle of my kitchen floor.

They've been out to repair our second-story unit three times this year alone, and have had to repair their own work from a year before. When I called today with yet ANOTHER issue with the same unit they've supposedly fixed she lectured me about my service agreement, argued with me about the number of times they've been out, told me it could be 24+ hours, THEN told me we'd have to wear a mask in our own HOME. Called another HVAC group, he's already on his way here. Go with someone else, trust me.

Three stars, because this review can be separated into two areas, HVAC service, and HVAC sales. Service - 4 stars. We've used JR since we purchased our home 2 years ago, since they were the installers of the units. Their service techs have always been timely, friendly, and I've felt comfortable in their quality and service. PM annual contract Sales - 1 star.

During our last PM visit on our HVAC unit, the service tech diagnosed a leak in our unit, which was no longer under warranty unfortunately. It was a 2 1/2 ton upstairs unit. In order to receive a quote on repair and replacement, company policy is to dispatch a service/sales manager. When he arrived, went through our options, and it was clear a new unit was the most cost-effective.

At this point, things devolved into a mess. The manager began with one price (somewhere in the upper $7k), then 'discounted' that price for being a customer, having a PM contract, writing a new number (7400). Then when I said I'd be doing due diligence and getting multiple estimates, he dropped the price again (7250). I repeated that I'll be doing diligence, and he dropped the price with another reason again (6900).

And a third time ($6750). Finally he said forget all of the numbers he had been quoting, and since I'll be talking to different companies, he wrote down his a 4th (or 5th) lower price ($6150), since, "this is what the other companies are going to quote you". Later that day he emailed the quote to me.with a 5th price, higher than the number he said was the quote! ($6400) Finally, he included in the email, if you find a lower price I can price match by dropping warranties on parts and labor for the unit.

We did find a lower price ($5700), and after a small negotiation, signed a HVAC new system contract with Short Pump Heating and Air. At that point, I was looking for any reason to not go with JR. When I told the JR service manager we were going with someone else, he immediately offered to drop labor and parts warranties from the unit, and install at $5100. No thanks.

I just bought a home that was built in 1966 and does not have hvac. First order of business was to get some AC before that Virginia summer hit, so I called James River and set it up to have them come out and give me a quote. A guy came out and took a look and clearly wanted nothing to do with this project. After some huffing and puffing about it he said it would cost in the $30k range to do the whole house - I was willing to spend $15-20k so he suggested getting just the upstairs done and using splits on the downstairs.

I was not impressed with his attitude at all about the job and felt like I was inconveniencing him with such a request but I asked him to email me the quote. Never heard from him again. Not. A. Word. Apparently my $20k was beneath him. I had two other companies come out and quote - both said they could do the whole house for less than $20k. I ended up going with Chase, inc.

They did not so much as bat an eyelash at what the job would entail and they did an amazing job! The unit runs amazing, looks great, the work was impeccable and the guys were awesome. Oh, and did I mention they did it for less than $15k? I highly recommend if you need HVAC done that you call Chase - I repeat, CALL CHASE. Whatever you do - do not call James River, I mean, unless you have like $50k to spend and then maybe they'll care to entertain you.

Avoid this company. The heat pump at my rental went out during the heat wave of July 2018. They sent a poor technician who, after two hours, couldn't figure out the issue and literally invented problems (he allegedly couldn't find a non-existent short in the power connection and some other nonsense). He recommended a replacement. The next day, their salesperson came and tried to convince me to buy a new system for an exorbitant price (~$10,000 for a 1100 sqft rowhouse).

No sir. I got a second opinion from another company. Their salesperson looked at the system and told me it could probably be fixed. The next day, their technician fixed it in 15 minutes (the unit was stuck in heat mode because of a bad thermostat, installed by the tech from this company). I hate to think that James River tried to pull one over on me, but it sure looks like it.

I have been a customer for over 20 years and found that the service people were all courteous and professional. Their prices were high but I was willing to pay a premium because I knew they will stand behind their work. Unfortunately, their prices have become OUTRAGEOUS. They now charge over $300 per hour for routine work. I have tried to discuss the price of a job with a supervisor on three occasions but they never call back. I have been a loyal customer but when my yearly service agreement expires I will be looking for a new company.
